Metals & Jewellery Care

How can I look after my jewellery?

Many factors can influence the wear and tear of jewellery. Therefore you should make sure that your jewellery is properly cleaned, repaired and stored. Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold to minimise these effects. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch and try to keep pieces apart, so that they don't rub together or tangle up. It is also recommended that you visit a jeweller once a year to have your jewellery cleaned professionally. This will keep them looking their best.

How do I prevent tarnishing?

Avoid swimming or bathing while wearing gold-plated or silver jewellery, and remove rings when washing your hands. Swimming pools that contain chlorine and salt water can tarnish precious metals and gemstones by dulling or eroding them. Hot springs - if your lucky enough to be going to one are a big no no for jewellery as they contain sulphur and your jewellery will turn black! Soapy water when bathing and showering can also leave a thin film which makes the metal seem dull. Finally be sure not to spray perfume over your jewellery when getting ready for that big night out. instead make sure it's the last thing you put on.

Sterling silver

Sterling Silver is the term that refers to 92.5% pure silver, or better known as 925 silver. Silver is too soft for daily wear if it's 100% pure, therefore it is mixed with alloys such as copper and zinc. Almost all precious metals used in jewellery manufacture are mixed with other metals to make them more hard wearing and more workable . Actually, when you see a piece of jewellery marked 925 it is not a guarantee the piece is actually made of that quality.. That's why in the U.K we have very strict hallmarking regulations and markings that help you see at a glance if the jewellery you are buying is of the highest standard.

To maintain the natural colour and shine of silver and gold, and to avoid oxidation or tarnishing, gently clean your silver jewellery regularly with a jewellery polishing cloth. For a deeper clean you may need an ultrasonic clean. This is a process whereby the item is placed in a pool of vibrating warm water. The vibrations and tiny bubbles remove any hidden dirt which can also cause a dull appearance. You can do this through your local jeweller.

What is gold vermeil?

The most modern way to plate metals these days is by using a process called electrolysis. Vermeil is a more expensive version of gold plated jewellery. It consists of a sterling silver base that is coated with gold by a complex process and must be at least 2 microns thick and a minimum of 14kt gold. Vermeil plate will last a lot longer than costume jewellery plate, even years. And, if the lifespan of the finish is important for you, your option should be vermeil or gold filled jewellery. Where we state that our jewellery is Gold Plate Vermeil, the customer should be aware that we always plate to 2 or 3 microns and only use between 18 and 24 karat gold. Nothing lower.

What if I have an allergy?

If you are allergic to gold plated earrings, or get a rash / itchy reaction when wearing them, try putting a little bit of clear nail varnish on the post. When it eventually wears off just re-apply it.

Do you use recycled metals?

All jewellery is made from recycled metals as it would be far too expensive to use mined metals. We refrain from stating that we use recycled metals as we don't want to associate with greenwashing. Unfortunately, using recycled metals does not prevents the mining of pure metals. It leaves the door open for other consumers of gold, like central banks and electronics, to consume freshly mined gold. The overall amount of gold mined globally does not decrease.
