Jewellery Care

Many factors can influence the wear and tear of jewellery. Therefore you should make sure that your jewellery is properly cleaned, repaired and stored. Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold to minimise these effects. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch and try to keep pieces apart, so that they don't rub together or tangle up. It is also recommended that you visit a jeweller once a year to have your jewellery cleaned professionally. This will keep them looking their best.

Care of Silver

Like all jewellery, avoid wearing silver in chlorinated water. This will discolour it. also make sure that silver is stored away from excessive light and air as these can further tarnish the jewellery. Keep the silver in a dark, cool and dry place.

Care of Gold

Retaining the value and appearance of your gold jewellery is quite simple. Here are a few steps to help you do this.

- because soap tends to cause a film that can make gold appear dull and dingy, its worthwhile removing your jewellery when you shower or bathe.

- a soft jewellery polishing cloth with tarnish preventive will help you keep the gold pieces lustrous and shining.

Care of gemstones

It's simply a matter of knowing what and what not to do when taking care of your precious stones.

- the best single piece of advice we can give you is to wipe your precious stone jewellery with a clean, soft damp cloth after wearing. This little habit will ensure that your jewellery is always looking its best.

- when your gemstone jewellery is not being worn, storage in a soft pouch is recommended.

- there are some things to avoid. Salt water and harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach or detergents can cause damage. The chemicals erode the finish and polish of the gems leaving them dull. hairspray, perfume and perspiration can also cause dullness if not regularly cleaned off.

Silver can tarnish very easily. To help prevent this, simply clean with a mild soap and water solution. Alternatively, a silver cleaner or soft felt cloth may be used, but tissue paper or paper towels will cause scratches.

Looking after your jewellery

It is best to keep your jewellery pieces separate from one another to avoid them scratching  and tangling. Our Azuni pouches are ideal for this,or use a lined soft fabric box or small zip lock plastic bag works fine. When not using them for longer periods of time, simply  wrap them in a soft cloth or tissue paper.

Sterling Silver is the term that refers to 92.5% pure silver, or better known as 925 silver. Silver is too soft for daily wear if it's 100% pure, therefore it is mixed with alloys such as copper and zinc. Almost all precious metals used in jewellery manufacture are mixed with other metals to make them more hardwearing and more workable . Actually ,when you see a piece of jewellery marked 925 it is not a guarantee the piece is actually made of that quality.. That's why in the U.K we have very strict hallmarking regulations and markings that help you see at a glance if the jewellery you are buying is of the highest standard.

To maintain the natural colour and shine of silver and gold, and to avoid oxidation or tarnishing, gently clean your silver jewellery regularly with a jewellery polishing cloth. For a deeper clean you may need an ultrasonic clean. This is a process whereby the item is placed in a pool of vibrating warm water. The vibrations and tiny bubbles remove any hidden dirt which can also cause a dull appearance. You can do this through your local jeweller.

Tarnishing .

Avoid swimming or bathing while wearing gold-plated or silver jewellery, and remove rings when washing your hands. Swimming pools that contain chlorine and salt water can tarnish precious metals and gemstones by dulling or eroding them. Hot springs - if your lucky enough to be going to one are a big no no for jewellery as they contain sulphur and your jewellery will turn black! Soapy water when bathing and showering can also leave a thin film which makes the metal seem dull. Finally be sure not to spray perfume over your jewellery when getting ready for that big night out. instead make sure it's the last thing you put on ..

Gold Vermeil -  whats it all about ?

The most modern way to plate metals these days is by using a process called electrolysis. Vermeil is a more expensive version of gold plated jewellery. It consists of a sterling silver base that is coated with gold by a complex process and must be at least 2 microns thick and a minimum of 14kt gold. Vermeil plate will last a lot longer than costume jewellery plate, even years. And, if the lifespan of the finish is important for you, your option should be vermeil or gold filled jewellery. Where we state that our jewellery is vermeil on sterling silver the customer should be aware that we always plate to 2 or 3 microns and only use 18 or 24 karat gold. Nothing lower.

Allergies. If you are allergic to gold plated earrings, or get a rash / itchy reaction when wearing them, try putting a little bit of clear nail varnish on the post. When it eventually wears off just re-apply it.
